In this Episode we are joined by special guests TJ and Kelsey, also known as The Nashville Wine Duo. We use the magic of streaming to do a virtual wine tasting between the two great cities of Seattle and Nashville. In addition to drinking wine together over the interwebs, we share some fun stories and get an update on their cat Felix. This episode follows a bit of a different format than usual, but, look, a little change of pace is good, right?!? Wine reviewed in this episode: 2019 Black Stallion Los Carneros Pinot Noir.

Episode 24: A Night with The Nashville Wine Duo! 00:00
Hello! And welcome to the Wine Pair podcast. I’m Joe, your sommelier of reasonably priced wine, and this is my wife and wine-pairing partner in crime - Carmela. And we are the Wine Pair.
Ok, so this week we are doing something totally different, and we are super excited about it. In this episode, instead of doing our usual 3 wines on a theme kind of thing, we are doing a collaboration with some new friends of ours, TJ and Kelsey, also known as the Nashville Wine Duo. Last weekend we got the chance to sit and talk with them which was super fun.
And in this crazy world of interwebs and Teams and Zooms and what have you, we got the chance to virtually taste a wine together - which was just a really cool thing to do. So, what you are going to hear in this episode is a bit of our conversation, and we think you are going to enjoy it. We of course don’t just talk about wines, we do take a couple of left turns and get to know them a bit, too.
And, for my shameless plug, that I always do, if you like what you are hearing, please subscribe to our podcast so you never miss an episode, and we would love it if you would leave us a rating and a review. Thanks!
Here we go with our conversation with the Nashville Wine Duo!
INTERVIEW with The Nashville Wine Duo 2:58
Ok, we have some questions for you today.
First, we are really excited to talk with you. I feel like we know each other even though we have only just met, and only met over the phone. It’s kind of amazing how we can get connected to people via social media just from similar interests. This is so fun. And, hopefully it gives us an excuse to visit Nashville someday which is definitely on our bucket list.
So, we’ll ask you some questions about Nashville, but first, we want to know a little bit about the two of you.
- How did the two of you meet, and was it love at first sight, or did it take a while before things started to sparkle?
Instagram and The Nashville Wine Duo 11:10
Ok, now, you two were definitely doing some stuff before the whole podcast thing. I know we started following each other on social media several months ago, and I think you were one of our earliest followers. From what it looks like to us, you are what we would call influencers in Nashville.
- Is that a fair description, and how did you start this Nashville Wine Duo thing?
When are you guys coming over for Sunday Night Dinner?
Tasting the Black Stallion Los Carneros Pinot Noir 26:18
It was a little hard to find the Black Stallion wine here in Seattle. I had to go to the Black Stallion website, and thankfully they had a handy-dandy tool to let customers see where they can find their wines. That helped a ton, although the first store I went to did not have it in stock. I actually went to the shelf and saw the shelf tag and the price, but there was no wine there! I asked the person in the wine department about it, and he said, if it ain’t on the shelf, it’s out. So I had to go to plan b and run around to a store called Super Lucky!
Wine: Black Stallion Los Carneros Pinot Noir
Region: California, Napa, Los Carneros
Producer: Black Stallion
Year: 2019
Price: $17.99
Retailer: Super Lucky (although it is at some QFCs)
Alcohol: 14.5%
Grapes: Pinot Noir
What we tasted and smelled: Cherry licorice, black cherry, smoke, spices
From Wikipedia:
- Los Carneros AVA includes parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties in California, U.S.A. It is located north of San Pablo Bay.
- The proximity to the cool fog and breezes from the bay makes the climate in Los Carneros cooler and more moderate than the wine regions farther north in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley.
- The cooler climate has made Los Carneros attractive for the cultivation of cooler climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay.
- Pinot noir from the Carneros is known for its crisp acidity and tight structure and frequently exhibits spicy berry fruit
Taste Profile
- Bottle: Dark berry aromas and taste, hints of brown sugar
- Typical: Cherry, raspberry, clove, mushroom, vanilla
- California: Raspberry sauce, plum, gun smoke, all spice
- Oregon: more tart fruit flavors
- Can also include things like cola, cinnamon, soil, tobacco, cocoa, rose and other flowers, dried herbs, red licorice, cotton candy, pomegranate, wild blueberry, black cherry
Post Interview reflection 34:50
That was really fun to do, and I think one of the best things about doing this podcast. I mean, doing the podcast together is super fun, but it is a nice change of pace to talk to other folks, and it is so fun to meet other people. And this has given us the chance to meet some people we would never have met otherwise.
